Kinja'd!!!

Help me out here, cause I think I’m having a bit of a Mandela effect with a certain Daimler-Chrysler era car. I vaguely remember that there was one American car built during that era from either Chrysler, Dodge, or Jeep that had the infotainment mounted to the bottom of the center stack.

I clearly remember seeing an image of one of those bland grey plastic interiors with a uConnect 1 screen at the bottom of the dash in the stupidest of places. I remember it being posted to Jalopnik with a caption like, “This is probably the worst ergonomics of any interior ever, courtesy of none other than Chrysler!” I thought it was the first generation pre-facelift Journey, but turns out it wasn’t.

I’ve gone through every mid-2000s D/C/J interior I can go through but I can’t find it. Am I going crazy, or did that really exist?

Chrysler had a pre-uConnect DVD nav system that was introduced in 2004. It fit Chrysler’s standard radio slot and was launched mid-cycle, leading it to be put in some interiors that weren’t originally laid out with nav systems in mind. Is that what you’re thinking of?

Watch the RCR of the Avenger,  there's probably enough glancing interior footage to find -- or not find -- what you're looking for.

Ergo-what-ics?

I almost want to say that’s worse than the ‘03 Focus’ radio cluster.

I’m guessing you’re thinking of the pre-facelift Journey.

Looks perfect.

No giant screen slapped on top of the dash , tangible buttons so you don’t have to stare at the screen........

Well, props on using what looks like a standard double-DIN slot. But it looks like a retrofit of a 90s car. An afterthought, not OEM.

Pre-face lift Journey w/o navigation. If I remember right the one with nav had the screen up top. Source: me. I was dumb enough to buy a Journey brand new in 08. It was an 09 model year and we owned it until last week when after 10 long years we finally came to our senses.

I was going to mention the original Journey that came out in 2009 as well. The Daimler days of Chrysler were pretty shitty. I sold them back then, besides the Ram and the Ch arger/Challenger/300 it was pretty embarrassing to be next to the largest Ford dealership in the city and sell something like the Journey and Avenger when they had cars like the Edge and Fusion that looked like an entire generation ahead of what we were selling. People like to dog on FCA, but when I went back and sold CJDR for a year after a 4 year hiatus, I could tell the difference was night and day.

Yep! Pretty sure it was the only mopar to have this Nav setup. All others had the all in one unit!

I wonder why they didn’t flip the radio and AC controls. Looks to be about the same size.

I had two successive half-generations of the same car, but the HVAC and radio were flip-flopped. It confused me for years.

Personally, I always though the ventilation should be lower in the dash, with more controls and readouts up high. Those things need servicing more frequently, plus it would reduce the heat soak issue of having all the vent piping right bellow the windshield.

Holy heck, I didn’t remember how weird that was with the screen up top and the controls on the bottom. On second thought I’m glad I didn’t have the nav. In ten years of ownership I rarely looked at the screen for the backup cam because mine was where the controls are.
